This is a TB/HIV care program based on a Public Private Mix approach to address issues of TB prevention and care in the private healthcare sector. Public–private mix (PPM), an approach recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) to cope with the tuberculosis (TB) epidemic worldwide has played a powerful role in TB control in many countries. PPM is currently a core strategy of the WHO End TB strategy and aims at engaging ALL healthcare providers. In Kenya, PPM approaches have been in place since 1997.

Studies show, the initial point of call for majority (60%) of persons seeking healthcare services is the private sector– both formal and informal providers.  A TB patient pathway assessment carried out in Kenya by the NTLD-P in 2015 revealed that up to 50% of patients prefer to seek private medical care especially in counties with a high urban population. This is because, often the private health sector is viewed as a more accessible, responsive, and individualized option for patients. It has however shown that the private sector has often failed to provide high-quality TB care, which NTPs are well positioned to deliver. We at ReSok work towards bridging this gap.

Program objective:
To improve access, standardize and enhance the quality TB care in the private healthcare sector in Kenya.

The target group:
ALL forms of healthcare service providers. Today, 307 private health entities (Institutional providers and Individual/ Solo provider Clinics) across 20 counties in Kenya including Nairobi, Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, Kericho, Kisumu, Kisii, Migori, Kakamega, Bungoma, Machakos, Kiambu, Kajiado, Nyeri, Vihiga, Kwale, Kitale & Kirinyaga are providing TB diagnostic and treatment services courtesy of the ReSok-PPM Initiative.

Current projects:

1. TB ARC project
The ReSok – Tuberculosis Accelerated Response and Care (TB ARC) project is funded by USAID through Centre for Health Solutions (CHS). The project objective to improve access, efficiency and quality of TB care and control in Kenya. This is achieved through strengthening leadership in coordination of PPM for TB prevention and care at national and county levels; expanding coverage for PPM through provider mapping and engagement; enhancing quality of TB care in the sector through training, supervision, technical support and regular feedback to engaged health care providers.
2. HCM – TB care and treatment Project
ReSok through the EQUALTIPS program is collaborating with PS Kenya’s USAID funded Health Communication & Marketing Project to integrate TB care and treatment and strengthen ART services in select facilities within the Tunza Family Health Network (51 Tunza franchisees in Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Nairobi, Kiambu, Murang’a and Vihiga).

Tunza which Swahili for “Care for’ is a social franchise that offers integrated healthcare services with a bias towards provision of quality and affordable Reproductive Health Services to Women in the lower Socio-economic segment.
