Advancing Respiratory Care Through the Interventional Pulmonology & Advanced Bronchoscopy Workshop
At Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital in Mombasa, the Interventional Pulmonology & Advanced Bronchoscopy Workshop brought together respiratory physicians, pulmonologists, trainees, and multidisciplinary healthcare professionals for an intensive programme focused on strengthening practical skills in advanced respiratory care.
Organised by the Respiratory Society of Kenya (ReSoK), the workshop combined evidence-based learning, hands-on procedural training, simulation, case-based discussions, and international expertise. With support from AstraZeneca, the initiative provided an important platform for strengthening local capacity in interventional pulmonology and expanding opportunities for advanced respiratory care in Kenya and the wider region.
Building Strong Foundations in Pleural Procedures
The workshop followed a progressive learning pathway, beginning with the fundamentals of pleural disease and thoracic procedures. Participants explored the evidence-based management of parapneumonic effusions and empyema, fibrinolytic therapy, pneumothorax, and persistent air leaks.
The practical component introduced participants to thoracic ultrasound, ultrasound-guided pleural biopsy, the Seldinger technique for chest drain insertion, and indwelling pleural catheter placement and care.

These hands-on sessions were complemented by case discussions examining complications of chest drainage and approaches to troubleshooting challenging procedural situations. The combination of theoretical knowledge and practical application allowed participants to connect clinical principles with the technical skills required in everyday practice.
Advancing the Management of Pleural and Malignant Disease
The programme then progressed to more advanced pleural interventions, with particular attention to malignant pleural effusions.
Participants examined the role of indwelling pleural catheters and pleurodesis, including the use of chemical agents such as talc. Discussions also explored surgical approaches including Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS), decortication, and pleurectomy, emphasising the importance of appropriate patient selection and multidisciplinary decision-making.
Complex case discussions provided an opportunity to consider how different treatment options can be evaluated according to individual patient circumstances, disease characteristics, and available resources.
Expanding Access to Medical Thoracoscopy
Medical thoracoscopy formed a major practical component of the workshop. Participants were introduced to both semiflexible and rigid thoracoscopy techniques, alongside approaches to chemical pleurodesis.
The practical sessions were designed to strengthen familiarity with equipment, procedural technique, and clinical decision-making while creating an environment where participants could engage directly with advanced pleural interventions.
Such training is particularly important in settings where access to specialised respiratory procedures remains limited. Strengthening local expertise can contribute to earlier diagnosis, improved management, and more efficient referral pathways for patients with complex pleural and thoracic conditions.




Addressing the Evidence Gap in LMICs
Beyond procedural skills, the workshop created space for discussion around the role of research in advancing respiratory care.
A dedicated research session examined the underrepresentation of patients from low- and middle-income countries in global pleural and bronchoscopy trials. The discussion highlighted the importance of generating evidence that reflects the populations, health systems, and clinical realities of the settings in which respiratory care is delivered.
Strengthening research participation and collaboration across LMICs is essential to ensuring that future clinical evidence is more representative and can better inform locally relevant practice.
Advancing Bronchoscopy, EBUS and Airway Interventions
The final stage of the workshop focused on advanced bronchoscopy and airway interventions.
Participants explored flexible bronchoscopy, including airway anatomy, indications, contraindications, and pre-procedure assessment. The programme progressed to Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS), with sessions covering nodal staging, transbronchial needle aspiration, needle targeting, and diagnostic yield.
Therapeutic airway interventions were also addressed, including balloon dilation, rigid bronchoscopy, and the deployment of silicone and metallic airway stents.
The practical programme brought these concepts together through dedicated learning tracks covering EBUS-TBNA, airway dilation, and flexible bronchoscopy simulation. Participants were able to engage with procedural techniques involving navigation, bronchoalveolar lavage, biopsy, nodal imaging, and airway intervention.
Connecting Local Capacity with Global Expertise
The workshop also demonstrated the value of connecting local clinical training with international expertise.
High-quality pre-recorded theoretical sessions provided a structured foundation before practical application, while interactive virtual engagement created opportunities for participants to discuss complex cases and exchange perspectives with international faculty.
This blended model allowed the workshop to combine the benefits of face-to-face procedural training with access to a wider pool of specialised expertise.




Investing in the Future of Respiratory Care
The Interventional Pulmonology & Advanced Bronchoscopy Workshop represented an important investment in strengthening specialised respiratory care in Kenya and the wider region.
By combining foundational pleural procedures with advanced thoracoscopy, bronchoscopy, EBUS, airway interventions, simulation, research discussions, and multidisciplinary case-based learning, the workshop provided participants with a broad and progressive learning experience.
The initiative also demonstrated the value of partnerships in advancing healthcare capacity. ReSoK's collaboration with AstraZeneca, alongside the participation of local and international respiratory experts and the support of Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital, created a platform for knowledge exchange, skills transfer, and professional collaboration.
As the burden of complex respiratory disease continues to evolve, strengthening the availability of specialised diagnostic and therapeutic services will be increasingly important. Building a skilled workforce capable of delivering advanced procedures safely and effectively is an essential part of that response.

Held at Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital in Mombasa, the workshop was therefore more than a clinical training programme. It was an investment in people, knowledge, technology, and systems — and a step towards ensuring that patients across Kenya and the wider region can benefit from increasingly advanced, timely, and patient-centred respiratory care.
Through continued collaboration, practical training, research, and innovation, interventional pulmonology can become an increasingly important part of the region's response to complex lung and pleural disease.
