Advancing Respiratory Care Through the Interventional Pulmonology & Advanced Bronchoscopy Workshop

At Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital in Mombasa, the Interventional Pulmonology & Advanced Bronchoscopy Workshop brought together respiratory physicians, pulmonologists, trainees, and multidisciplinary healthcare professionals for an intensive programme focused on strengthening practical skills in advanced respiratory care.

Organised by the Respiratory Society of Kenya (ReSoK), the workshop combined evidence-based learning, hands-on procedural training, simulation, case-based discussions, and international expertise. With support from AstraZeneca, the initiative provided an important platform for strengthening local capacity in interventional pulmonology and expanding opportunities for advanced respiratory care in Kenya and the wider region.

Building Strong Foundations in Pleural Procedures

The workshop followed a progressive learning pathway, beginning with the fundamentals of pleural disease and thoracic procedures. Participants explored the evidence-based management of parapneumonic effusions and empyema, fibrinolytic therapy, pneumothorax, and persistent air leaks.

The practical component introduced participants to thoracic ultrasound, ultrasound-guided pleural biopsy, the Seldinger technique for chest drain insertion, and indwelling pleural catheter placement and care.

These hands-on sessions were complemented by case discussions examining complications of chest drainage and approaches to troubleshooting challenging procedural situations. Discussions also explored surgical approaches including Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS), decortication, and pleurectomy, emphasising the importance of appropriate patient selection and multidisciplinary decision-making.

A dedicated research session examined the underrepresentation of patients from low- and middle-income countries in global pleural and bronchoscopy trials. The programme progressed to Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS), with sessions covering nodal staging, transbronchial needle aspiration, needle targeting, and diagnostic yield.

Therapeutic airway interventions were also addressed, including balloon dilation, rigid bronchoscopy, and the deployment of silicone and metallic airway stents.

The practical programme brought these concepts together through dedicated learning tracks covering EBUS-TBNA, airway dilation, and flexible bronchoscopy simulation. Participants were able to engage with procedural techniques involving navigation, bronchoalveolar lavage, biopsy, nodal imaging, and airway intervention.

Through expert-led teaching, live demonstrations, simulation-based practice, and structured clinical case discussions, the workshop created an environment where participants could move beyond theory and engage directly with the realities of respiratory procedures. It was a space to learn, practise, ask questions, troubleshoot challenges, and build the confidence needed to translate new knowledge into patient care.

In some cases, clinicians need to look deeper - to examine the airways, obtain appropriate samples, and gather the information needed to understand what is affecting the patient.

This was the focus of the two-day Bronchoscopy Camp at Kakamega County General Teaching and Referral Hospital, where ReSoK brought specialized respiratory expertise closer to patients requiring further evaluation of complex lung conditions.
